uPrint Plus in the Maker Space

The uPrint Plus developed by Stratasys, Ltd. is a (FDM) machine also known as a 3D Printer, which is ideal for models of parts that need to mimic the strength and detail of plastic injection molding. The uPrint Plus extrudes layers of ABS thermoplastic about 0.010 inches thick that stack up to form a 3D model of the desired part. The uPrint Plus has at least 10 different colors of ABS to choose from.

Processing

Good STL in Netfabb

After you have designed the 3D model of your desired part, export the part in the STereoLithography (.stl) file format. The STL format describes only the surface geometry of the object instead of the object as a whole. Then open the file in the Autodesk Netfabb software to repair the file.

We will only process STLs which have:
1 shell per continuous part
0 border edges
0 invalid orientations
0 holes.

Even if Netfabb reports no invalid orientations, if we see red triangles in repair mode there is a problem with your model. Print at your own risk.

Fixing a File

Students are welcome to use any of our computers for fixing their files in Netfabb or Rhino.

Here are some tips to get you started at home:
Ideally in Rhino you want one closed polysurface before meshing.
NetFabb is better at meshing than Rhino. Consider opening the 3dm file in NetFabb to generate the STL instead.
Default repair is decent at fixing holes, border edges, and invalid orientations. Then try using boolean join to reduce shells down to 1.
If boolean join results in multiple shells then most likely the shells are not contiguous. Consider deleting extra shells in model.
Extended repair wraps an existing STL in a new mesh. This can severely alter geometry and result in thin walled sections.

Printing a Part

Once a file has been processed and is ready to be printed, find a shop supervisor to help add it to the queue. The length of the queue is highly variable, and the time it takes to print a model may range from a few days to being ready by the end of the day it is submitted. Keep in mind that the UPrint queue is very full during finals, midterms, and the time surrounding IPro Day. An estimate of queue length and a time to come pick up the part will be communicated to you once your part is added to the queue. Once a part is successfully in the queue, it is ready to be printed. The average part takes about 2 hours to print, while a very complex part could take full days to print. The webcam livestream on the IdeaShop wiki can be used to check the progress of your part.

Cleaning Parts

Once the model has been successfully created, it is removed from the printer and separated from the printing tray base. From here, it is placed in a chemical bath in order to remover the support material in a way that does not affect the model. Please allow 1-3 hours for the model to sit in the bath, depending on the complexity of the model, in order to successfully remove all support material. Once this process is complete, the part is ready to be picked up by the creator.

Machine Proficiency


In order for an individual to advance in machine proficiency they must demonstrate ability to perform certain actions or tasks. All levels include abilities and concepts from lower levels.

This section is primarily for student workers.

Level 0

Individual has demonstrated they are capable of:

  • Analyzing a student's file with a Netfab proficiency level of 3 to prepare for printing
  • Basic operating parameters of the uPrint Plus. (Reference per the User's Manual).
  • Identifying location of power switch
  • Overall familiarity with general 3D Printer system operations.
  • Installing spool into material carrier cartridges.
  • Toggling chamber lights.
  • Pausing a build.
  • Resuming a build that was paused.
  • Canceling a build.
  • Understand and properly store ABS.

Individual understands the concepts:

  • The uPrint Plus uses ABSplus colour materials.
  • Wall thickness requirement for uPrint Plus.
  • Color choices available with the uPrint Plus.
  • Be aware that 3D Printers can be very hot to the touch, especially after a recent print job.
  • ABS material is negatively affected by exposure to atmospheric conditions and high humidity. Care and proper storage is paramount to ensure material wastage is minimized and clogging of the uPrint Plus is avoided.


Level 1

Individual has demonstrated they are capable of:

  • Correctly loading and sending file to uPrint queue.
  • Align and securely place part on GrabCAD software.
  • Correctly starting a print job.
  • Correctly installing EEProm to material cartridges.
  • Changing material and support cartridges in their respective bays.
  • Proper feeding of materials.
  • Proper GrabCAD utilization and part orientation.
  • Removing a printed part from inside the uPrint Plus.
  • Post-processing in the Support Cleaning Apparatus.
  • Emptying the purge bucket after each build.
  • Inspecting the tip wipe assembly for build up.
  • Inspecting the tip shields for damage or material build up.
  • Familiarity with Daily, 500 Hour, to 2000 Hour Maintenance practices.


Individual understands the concepts:

  • A remote desktop account is required to send the file to the printer.
  • When placing part on build plate, don't orient the bottom of the part to hang parallel with the plate. Rather, angle large flat surfaces to make the part less likely to peel off during printing.
  • uPrint Plus uses GrabCAD to process the parts.
  • uPrint Plus utilizes dual materials bays for uninterrupted print time.
  • Save EEProm components for recycling.
  • Removing a part involves: Removing part bed, removing part from plate cleanly, removing any excess support material embedded on bed plane, and proper stowage of unused printer beds.
  • Wearing gloves when utilizing the Support Cleaning Apparatus.
  • Proper cleaning and rinsing procedures for post-soaked parts.
  • Proper care for the uPrint Plus and following routine maintenance practices will ensure that potential clogging and failure is minimized.


Level 2

Individual has demonstrated they are capable of:

  • Basic Troubleshooting and Maintenance of uPrint Plus.
  • Properly and routinely conducting maintenance on the uPrint Plus.
  • Able to Identify Fault Determination Codes
  • Return the uPrint Plus to service in situational system crashes.
  • Reconfigure and connect Networks and IP Addresses to the uPrint Plus.
  • Identify when the uPrint Plus is clogged.
  • Identify and Implement the Troubleshooting Checklist in the User Manual.
  • Assisting a Level 3 Mentor in effective troubleshooting and repair.

Individual understands the concepts:

  • Material Recycling Codes and Classifications.
  • Removing the EEproms from material support carriers for recycling.


Level 3

Individual has demonstrated they are capable of:

  • Diagnose and Recover from Loss of Extrusion.
  • Diagnose and Repair a Clogged Extrusion Tip
  • Extrusion Tip Replacement and Calibration.
  • Replace Chamber Light Bar.

Individual understands the concepts:

  • Proper Troubleshooting Practices
  • Fault Codes and Errors are found in the User's Manual, which can be found online.
  • Safety Requirements for certain repair and maintenance practices, as identified per the User's Manual.
