Remote File Submissions

Even though the Idea Shop is inaccessible to the Illinois Tech community for in-person use, students enrolled in certain classes will still be able to access our services. We have set up a system for students to remotely submit their files for processing by Idea Shop staff. Once received, our staff will communicate with you via email to give a time and cost estimate. Once you confirm we will process the file(s) and notify you once your parts are ready for pick up. This process may require more time than usual. Please submit your file at minimum one week before you would like to receive your part.

Students


IPRO Students

If you are currently enrolled in an IPRO class, you may submit files for 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC. See the steps below for more details.

Non-IPRO Students

If you are not currently enrolled in an IPRO class, you may only submit files for 3D printing and CNC. All other files may not be accepted. See the steps below for more details.

*Specifically, if your department has access to other laser cutters and engravers we will not accept remote submissions for the lasers.

Open Hours

During our current limited open hours all students may utilize the Idea Shop services and machines.

Staff / Faculty / Others


Faculty involved with time sensitive research projects may contact the Idea Shop with their inquires. You will be informed via email if your job has been accepted for processing and given a rough time estimate. An additional fee may be assessed to cover labor costs.

All others individuals will be required to wait until the Idea Shop is once again accessible in person.

3D Prints


Submission

Email ideashop[at]iit.edu with your attached STL or VRML file. For each attached file include the following information:

  • Class number / name
  • Student name
  • Filename
  • Which printer you would like to use. Info on Idea Shop printers can be found here: 3D Printers
  • Color / Material (if applicable for the desired printer).
  • The file dimensions and units.

Processing

Upon receipt of your email Idea Shop staff will review your files in Autodesk NetFabb. If your file does not qualify as a good STL as explained here, the staff will inform you that your part will not be printed and you will not be charged. Reviewing the Fixing STLs page before sending your file will reduce its processing time.

Wall Thickness

Each 3D printer has a recommended minimum wall thickness. To pass a NetFabb wall thickness test your part must be less than 5 percent of surface area below the minimum thickness threshold. The minimum wall thickness for:

  • uPrint - 1 mm
  • Form2 - 1 mm
  • Objet Eden - 0.6 mm
  • zPrint - 2mm

If your part fails the wall thickness tests, but you would still like to process and print the part, you must submit a consent statement including your name, class number / name, total cost, knowledge of potential failure and A-number.

Example:

I, John Doe A12345678, understand that the part that I wish to print for my class IPRO 497-XXX fails to meet minimum 1 mm wall thickness requirements for the uPrint machine. Having this in mind, I still wish to print the part as is and will accept the full cost of the part ($$$) regardless of whether it successfully prints or not.

Payment

If your class / research project has a budget approved by the Idea Shop Lab Manager you will need to send a consent statement including the total cost, your name, class number / name, and A Number.

For all other scenarios you will be asked to pay via the Idea Shop Touchnet credit card store. From the home page select 3D Printing and input the total number of cubic centimeters or grams for your part(s). Once payment is complete you must forward your receipt to ideashop[at]iit.edu. Your part will not be added to the queue until we have received your receipt.

Printing

Once payment is complete your part will be added to the queue. You will received further communication via email when your part is ready.

Laser Cuts


Submission

  1. First, download the AutoCAD laser bed template: Epilog Laser Template
  2. Create or import your geometry into the template. Make sure to move your lines to the appropriate layers. Save your file as a DWG.
    Layer Meanings:
    • Red - Raster will lightely etch on the surface of the material.
    • Yellow - Cut First will cut all of these lines before moving on to any other lines
    • Pink - Cut Last will cut all of these lines after all of the other lines have been completed
    • Green - Score Shallow will only cut 25% of the way through the material
    • Blue - Score Deep will only cut 50% of the way through the material
  3. Send an email to ideashop[at]iit.edu with your DWG file and include the following information for each file:
    • Class number / name
    • Student Name
    • Filename
    • Material / Thickness / Color

Processing

Upon receipt of your email Idea Shop staff will review your files in AutoCAD. If your file does not qualify as a good DWG, the staff will inform you that your part will not be cut. A good DWG should have all of the layers appropriately selected and all geometries placed within the cutting templates.

If your class / research project has a budget approved by the Idea Shop Lab Manager you will need to send a consent statement including the total cost, your name, class number / name, and A Number.

CNC


Submission

Email ideashop[at]iit.edu with your attached Rhino 5 or STEP file.Note: We are only accepting remote submissions for the Roland 4-Axis CNC For each attached file include the following information:

  • Class number / name
  • Student name
  • Filename.
  • The file dimensions and units.
  • Stock material type and dimensions with units.

Processing

Idea Shop staff will complete the tool pathing for your geometry and contact you via email with any questions.

After tool pathing is complete the Idea Shop staff will email you with the time estimate for your files.

Cutting

You must be present while the machine is cutting your geometry. Arrange a time to cut with Idea Shop staff via email.

Part Pick-Up


You will be contacted via email once your part is completed. Part pick-up times are at the discretion and availability of the Idea Shop/IPRO staff.

When picking up your part:

  • You must have your IIT Hawkcard or the part can not be taken.
  • If another individual is picking up your job you must identify that person for alternate pick-up via email. This individual must bring their IIT Hawkcard for pick-up.
