Python is an interpreted 1, object-oriented 2 , dynamic 3, high level programming language 4 . It has a wide variety of applications, particularly for Rapid Application Development. Python's syntax is simple and easy to use because it emphasizes readability, making it a good language for beginners to pick up. Languages and expressions that follow this format are often called "Pythonic", because Python was designed to be a language with a correct answer. If someone was programming in Python and wanted to know how to do something specific, there likely would be resources on that specific goal.
1 An interpreted language is a language where the source code is translated by a different program (the interpreter) to read and execute the code. This is in contrast with a compiled language, where the target machine directly translates the code. An example of this would be if a person had a recipe in a language they did not know. The compiled way of getting that recipe were if the recipe were already translated to English, and the person could just read it and use it. The interpreted way of getting that recipe is if someone who natively spoke the language translated it for the person who needed it as they went.
2An object oriented programming language is a language that, at it's core, is used to create and describe objects. Objects are often things that mirror the real world, like making a list of customers for a store or visitors at a hotel. Objects could be cars or buildings or students or merchandise. Many modern programming languages are object oriented.
3 A programming language is considered dynamic if it performs certain compile-stage actions at runtime.
4 A high level programming language is a programming language that looks more like plain English than machine code. There are several levels of abstraction between the code the machine can understand and the code that programmers type to make a program.
Python is primarily used for Rapid Application Development. Rapid Application Development is a type of software development methodology that prioritizes rapid prototype releases and iterations. In this sense, Python mirrors the type of prototype process used in the idea shop, making it a good option for various projects.
In terms of real world projects, Python is commonly used in the following:
- Web applications
- GUI based applications
- 3D applications
- Accessing databases
- Data analysis
Python can also be used in microcontrollers. MicroPython is one such example. When working with embedded systems, Python is most effectively used as a middleman for communication with the system. It can also be used to take information from an embedded system for analysis purposes.
