Monoprice Mini in the Idea Shop Prototyping Lab

The Monoprice Mini Select v2, developed by Monoprice, is a (FDM) machine, also known as a 3D Printer. This printer is located in the Idea Shop Assembly Area by the north electronics workstation and is available for use by students at absolutely no cost. Students are responsible for all aspects of using the machine, as laid out on this page. Please make an effort to follow the suggested settings, and try to keep your prints as short as possible.

When in use, you MUST be present to watch the printer, or have a friend stay and watch the printer. It is a fire hazard. If the printer is left unattended, your part WILL be stopped.

This printer is considered an "On-Your-Own" printer, and is much more basic than other printers available in the Idea Shop. It may not be able to handle complex geometry, and is generally used for first prototypes. If complex geometry is required for your part, please use a different printer available.

The recommended file format for printing with the Monoprice Mini is ".gcode". Use Ultimaker Cura software, available on the Assembly Area Workstations, to prepare your part. To load your file onto the Monoprice Mini, save it as a ".gcode" file to the microSD card connected to the Printer. There is a microSD to SD card adapter located by the Monoprice Mini if necessary.

Choosing a pre-set profile will help make life easier.

Preparing Your Part

First, use Netfabb to make sure there are no issues with your files. Your parts MUST be one shell each. See more at Fixing STLs. Once the files are properly prepared and saved as STLs, open the files in Ultimaker Cura and place them on the bed as desired. On the right, make sure the settings are set according to our suggestions above. To ensure that support material will be created, enter Layer view. Support material made by this printer is created using the same material as the part material, and must be removed from the part manually.

Leveling the Bed

First, home the printer and turn off the power. Using paper, set the height of the head to the thickness of a page of A4 printer paper. Manually move the head to each of the corners and adjust the springs using a 5/64ths hex bit.

Changing the Material

PLA is the only material that can be used with this printer.

Removing Parts

DO NOT USE SHARP OBJECTS TO REMOVE A PART! It damages the bed of the printer.

Machine Proficiency

In order for an individual to advance in machine proficiency they must demonstrate ability to perform certain actions or tasks. All levels include abilities and concepts from lower levels.

This section is primarily for student workers.

Level 0

Individual has demonstrated they are capable of:

  • Turn Monoprice on.
  • Remove/insert SD Card.

Individual understands the concepts:

  • Printer must be on to work.

Level 1

Individual has demonstrated they are capable of:

  • Cancel a print.
  • Start a new print.
  • Do an Auto prepare on cura.
  • Successfully print a piece.

Individual understands the concepts:

  • SD card with gcode must be inserted for the printer to run desired print.

Level 2

Individual has demonstrated they are capable of:

  • Change speed of printer.
  • Change Temperature of extruder.
  • Change Temperature of bed.

Individual understands the concepts:

  • Heat affects the quality of print
  • Failure may be due to insufficient heat.

Level 3

Individual has demonstrated they are capable of:

  • Changing support type in Cura.
  • Changing type of quality (low, normal, fine, ect.)
  • Changing build plate support type.

Individual understands the concepts:

  • Support material is same as print material.
  • Changing structure of support material influences the results of print.
