Disciplinary Action

This is a working draft. Please see Idea Shop staff for more information. This section will contain the likely disciplinary recourse for various violations of the User Agreement or safety protocols. This list is not exhaustive and all disciplinary actions are subject to review by the appropriate departments within Illinois Institute of Technology.

Example scenarios with Bob the Prototyper will be given for violations and possible applicable recourse.

General


Violations of the Idea Shop User Agreement can be grouped into the following categories:

Access

Violation of the access clause where an individual is found to be within the Idea Shop when Idea Shop personnel are not present or without the express written permission of Idea Shop personnel.

  • All violations will result in; revocation of access to the Idea Shop, and the filing of an incident report.

Example: Bob obtains unauthorized access to the Idea Shop. Bob's Idea Shop access is revoked pending administrative review.

Safety Equipment

Violation of the use of required safety equipment.

  • Initial violations will result in verbal warnings.
  • Repeated or flagrant violation will result in; re-certification of machine safety training, and individuals will be required to repeat the Idea Shop general safety training. This violation may result in; revocation of access to the Idea Shop, additional safety equipment training, and the filing of an incident report.

Example: Bob repeatedly uses power tools without wearing safety glasses after receiving multiple warnings from Idea Shop staff. Bob's Idea Shop access is temporarily revoked, he is required to re-certify on all machines, participate in additional safety glasses training, and repeat the general lab safety training before his access will be reinstated.

Tool Usage

Violation of the authorized or safe use of tools and equipment.

  • Initial violations will result in verbal warnings.
  • Repeated or flagrant violation will result in; additional tool and equipment safety training, and individuals will be required to repeat the Idea Shop general safety training. This violation may result in; revocation of access to the Idea Shop, and the filing of an incident report.

Example: Bob uses his pocket knife to cut a 4 inch block of foam. Idea Shop personnel instruct him to use another tool within the lab to cut his foam and warn him that if he uses his pocket knife again disciplinary action will be taken.

Example: Bob has never used a power drill before and is found leaning over a drill being actively used with his long hair not tied back. Idea Shop personnel instruct him in the safe use of a drill and emphasize that all loose articles of clothing, jewelry or hair should be removed or tied back.

Machine Usage

Violation of the authorized or safe use of machines.

  • All violations will result in; re-certification of machine safety training, and individuals will be required to repeat the Idea Shop general safety training. This violation may result in; revocation of access to the Idea Shop, additional safety equipment training, and the filing of an incident report.

Example: Bob is certified to use the bandsaw in another lab. He decides to use the Idea Shop bandsaw without authorization or Idea Shop bandsaw training. Bob's Idea Shop access is temporarily revoked, he is required to participate in the Idea Shop bandsaw safety training, and repeat the general lab safety training before his access will be reinstated.

Chemical Usage

Housekeeping

Violation of the lab housekeeping policies.

  • Initial violations will result in verbal warnings.
  • Repeated or flagrant violation will result in; individuals will be required to repeat the Idea Shop general safety training. This violation may result in; revocation of access to the Idea Shop, additional housekeeping and custodial training.

Example: Bob leaves and does not clean up after himself in the wood shop. Tools and debris are scattered though a walkway where he was working. Bob is given a verbal warning and told that if he violates the housekeeping policies again his access will be revoked. If Bob wants his access reinstated he will be required to; participate in housekeeping and custodial training, and repeat the general lab safety training.

Behavioral

Insubordination towards Idea Shop personnel with regards to the user agreement and safety protocols will not be tolerated.

Student Specific


  • Violations may be reported to the Dean of Students through filing an incident report.
  • Applicable faculty may be informed of a student's violations.
  • For class / group projects disciplinary actions may be assigned to all individuals within the class / group.

Staff and Faculty Specific


  • Violations may be reported to Human Resources.

Other


Incubator Companies

  • Violations may result in termination of the Idea Shop Facility Use Agreement.
