Secure Your Work Piece. Drill Pilot Holes or use center punch to start holes. Use a Drill Stand if necessary. Properly Set the Drill Bit - hand tighten chuck and make sure drill is spinning concentrically before tightening with chuck key.
Apply Proper Pressure to the Drill - not excessive. Peck drill if necessary. Drill only in a perpendicular direction to the materiel being perforated. Adjust the clutch according to material hardness. Never use drill bits to purposely elongate holes.

Depending on the diameter of the drill and the hardness of the material being drilled it may be necessary to adjust the rpms of the spindle.
