Based on the current general recommendations of public health organizations and Illinois Tech's decision to move classes digital, we believe it is not possible to safely allow the Idea Shop's large user base to access the shop spaces and keep a low probability of disease transmission. When making these decisions we have consulted the COVID-19 shop policies and experiences of many other universities. The fundamental concerns include the large collection of shared equipment, the inability to allow a 6 foot radius between individuals, and preventing large gatherings of individuals. Based on the experiences of other universities we are confident in our policy as it stands. We will re-evaluate as the more information / recommendations become available from the public health community.

When making these decisions we have consulted the COVID-19 shop policies and experiences of shops in many other universities. ===Processing===

:Main Article : Processing 3D Files

Upon receipt of your email Idea Shop staff will review your files in Autodesk NetFabb. If your file does not qualify as a good STL as explained here, the staff will inform you that your part will not be printed and you will not be charged. Reviewing the Fixing STLs page before sending your file will reduce its processing time.

Wall Thickness
Each 3D printer has a recommended minimum wall thickness. To pass a NetFabb wall thickness test your part must be less than 5 percent of surface area below the minimum thickness threshold.

The minimum wall thickness for:

* uPrint - 1 mm

* Form2 - 1 mm

* Objet Eden - 0.6 mm

* zPrint - 2mm

If your part fails the wall thickness tests, but you would still like to process and print the part, you must submit a consent statement including your name, class number / name, total cost, knowledge of potential failure and A-number.

<blockquote class="blockquote" style="font-size:1em; margin-left:2em">

Example:

I, John Doe A12345678, understand that the part that I wish to print for my class IPRO 497-XXX fails to meet minimum 1 mm wall thickness requirements for the uPrint machine. Having this in mind, I still wish to print the part as is and will accept the full cost of the part ($$$) regardless of whether it successfully prints or not.

</blockquote>

Payment
If your class / research project has a budget approved by the Idea Shop Lab Manager you will need to send a consent statement including the total cost, your name, class number / name, and A Number.

For all other scenarios you will be asked to pay via the Idea Shop Touchnet credit card store. From the home page select <code>3D Printing</code> and input the total number of cubic centimeters or grams for your part(s). Once payment is complete you must forward your receipt to ideashop[at]iit.edu. Your part will not be added to the queue until we have received your  receipt.

Processing
Upon receipt of your email Idea Shop staff will review your files in AutoCAD. If your file does not qualify as a good DWG, the staff will inform you that your part will not be cut. A good DWG should have all of the layers appropriately selected and all geometries placed within the cutting templates.

These policies are subject to change at any time without notice. As of March 4, 2021 the Grainger Maker Space will remain closed to in-person use for the Spring 2021 semester, and the Assembly Area will be open to in-person use by appointment only.

 • Make a Reservation Only users who have completed a safety training can currently reserve work time in the Assembly Area. More information regarding safety training here: Safety Training

FAQ

Do I need to take another safety training for the Assembly Area for Spring 2021?

If you currently have a valid safety training for the Assembly Area you do not need to take the online safety training quizzes. However you must watch the new safety training video, as it contains new COVID-specific information.

What remote prototyping services are available from the Idea Shop?

Below are the currently available remote prototyping services being offered by the Idea Shop:

Can I submit personal projects for fabrication?

Users may submit personal project files, however based on our current workload these files will be accepted on a case by case basis and given the lowest priority for completion.

Why is the Idea Shop not allowing in person use?

Based on the current recommendations of public health organizations and Illinois Tech, it is not possible to safely allow the Idea Shop's large user base to access the Maker Space and keep a low probability of disease transmission. When making these decisions we have consulted the COVID-19 shop policies and experiences of shops in many other universities. Fundamental concerns include lack of staffing, the large collection of shared equipment, the inability to maintain adequate social distancing, and preventing large gatherings of individuals. We will re-evaluate our policy as more information / recommendations become available from the public health community and Illinois Tech administration.
